07/07/2010 - Newport, RI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fifth-seeded American Mardy Fish booked a spot in the quarterfinals, while top-seeded 2009 runner-up Sam Querrey and defending champion Rajeev Ram were second-round upset victims Wednesday at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
The 6-foot-6 Querrey was sent packing by rising 6-foot-5 Jamaican Dustin Brown 6-4, 6-3 on the grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The 108th-ranked Brown fired 14 aces at the world No. 19 Querrey and broke the American's serve three times, while Querrey failed to enjoy even one break- point chance in the surprising setback.
Querrey lost to his fellow American Ram in last year's Newport finale.
Ram joined Querrey in the losers' column on Wednesday, as this week's seventh seed succumbed to South African qualifier Raven Klaasen 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
Fish, meanwhile, avoided an upset by drilling Indian Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-0 on Day 3. The Minnesota native Fish will face capable Frank Dancevic in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Belgian Olivier Rochus joined the parade into the quarters by leveling Ukrainian Sergei Bubka 6-3, 6-3. The 23-year-old Bubka is the son of legendary pole-vaulter Sergey Bubka.
Rochus' round-of-eight opponent will be the upstart Klaasen.
In other second-round play, Argentine Brian Dabul handled Japan's Go Soeda 7-5, 6-2 to setup a quarterfinal tilt with Brown, while Canada's best, Dancevic, danced his was past French marathon man Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Mahut, of course, made some tennis history two weeks ago when he lost to 6- foot-9 American John Isner in the longest tennis match ever played -- 11 hours, 5 minutes over three days -- in the opening round at Wimbledon. The wild card Mahut lost to Dancevic in a mere 76 minutes on Wednesday.
The winner of this $500,000 event will collect $75,700.
