Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam winner who is currently ranked 95th in the world dropped the first set and overcame 39 unforced errors to down Petrova 1-6, 7-5. 6-3.
Williams will next face 11th-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic, who took out Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 6-3, 6-4.
